What types of barcodes can a barcode inspection system detect?

Barcode inspection systems are designed to detect a wide variety of barcode types:

  • 1D Barcodes: Sometimes called "linear barcodes", 1D barcodes are the most common type of barcode. They include UPC, Code 128, and Code 39.
  • 2D Barcodes: These barcodes encode data in two directions - horizontally and vertically. They contain more information than 1D barcodes and include Data Matrix and QR codes.
  • Stacked Linear Barcodes: Stacked barcodes are a combination of multiple barcodes stacked on top of each other, and are commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry to encode product information and dosage instructions.

METTLER TOLEDO barcode inspection systems can also detect and verify other types of codes such as expiration dates, date codes, lot codes, and serial numbers.

How does a barcode inspection system work?

Barcode inspection systems use high-resolution cameras to capture images of barcodes as they move along the production line. These images are analyzed by advanced vision inspection software to check that the barcode is correctly printed, placed, and is easily readable. If the system detects an error, an automatic rejection device can be used to remove the faulty product from the production line. By detecting missing, incorrect, or unreadable barcodes on packages, barcode inspection systems can help manufacturers avoid costly errors and help support compliance measures.
