One Automated Run, Many Results: Boosting Efficiency with Multiparameter Systems

Testing laboratories often face the challenge of analyzing a large number of samples across multiple parameters, a task that can quickly overwhelm available staff and stretch turnaround times. Fully automated systems offer an effective solution, helping labs increase throughput, accelerate time-to-result, and keep both operational and labor costs under control.

METTLER TOLEDO offers a broad range of analytical instruments that can be used individually to measure parameters such as density, refractive index, pH, and conductivity. However, when these instruments are combined into a single multiparameter system, they deliver far greater efficiency and ease of use.

For example, a density meter can be paired with an external refractive index cell, and extended further with pH and conductivity probes in an automated flow-through setup. This configuration enables measurement of up to four parameters in one seamless run.

To support data integrity and compliance, the system can be connected to LabX™ PC software for centralized data management. A sample changer can also be added to automate vial filling, rinsing, and drying steps, ensuring high-throughput performance without additional operator workload.

The result is a single, unattended run that delivers multiple parameters in parallel, a major advantage for today’s high-volume testing environments.

Example: Flow-Through Multiparameter Setup

In a representative configuration, all measurement cells are arranged in a flow-through sequence: refractometer cell, density meter, pH sensor, and conductivity sensor. This setup provides both direct readings (e.g., refractive index, density, conductivity, pH) and calculated values such as Brix, specific gravity, or concentrations.

Accuracy is assured by the instruments’ advanced features. For instance, Density Excellence includes bubble detection and live video views, enabling spot checks during filling. Placing the density meter after the refractive index cell ensures reliable filling even with viscous samples.

The two electrochemical probes are integrated using the SevenDirect™ pH/conductivity dual meter, allowing both measurements to be carried out simultaneously. All results are consolidated by the density meter, which acts as the master instrument.

Added Flexibility and Ease of Use

Connecting the system to LabX via Ethernet or USB adds further convenience. The PC can be located anywhere on the local network, with results monitored virtually through a workbench display. The OneClick™ function enables users to start measurement sequences with minimal effort.

For even greater efficiency, LabX supports barcoding with SmartCodes. Using either a handheld or built-in barcode reader, users can scan directly from vial barcodes to start the correct method. This also records the sample ID, method ID, and date, automatically linking results to the right sample.

LabX connectivity also helps laboratories maintain compliance with regulations such as 21 CFR Part 11 and EU GMP Annex 2. An audit trail automatically logs all actions, which cannot be changed or deleted, ensuring full data integrity. Role-based management, electronic signatures, and review/release workflows further support adherence to “four eyes” or even “six eyes” principles, a critical factor for regulatory audits.

To maximize accuracy in high-throughput systems, cleaning and performance checks are essential. The InMotion PX Autosampler supports cleaning with three solvents (commonly water and/or deconex® 0.3% followed by acetone or ethanol) and a drying step. Performance checks with water can also be integrated between analyses to confirm cleanliness and readiness.

Multiparameter systems can also be expanded with additional modules, such as spectrophotometers for color, absorbance, and UV/Vis, or polarimeters for optical rotation. Even autotitrators can be connected, creating a comprehensive, flexible system tailored to the lab’s specific needs.

By designating one instrument as the master, results from peripheral modules are consolidated automatically. Tolerance checks can also be performed simultaneously, ensuring robust quality control and consistent product results.
