You see it every day in the lab: bins overflowing with plastics such as pipette tips and racks, microcentrifuge tubes, reagent reservoirs and other plastic waste. Indeed, biomedical labs are estimated to produce around 5.5 million tons of plastic waste annually, which is approximately the weight of 67 cruise liners! All that plastic has consequences for the environment.

Mettler Toledo and Rainin are committed to helping our customers be more sustainable. We offer lower-plastic lab consumables and our manufacturing and operations are designed to consume fewer resources, improve recyclability, and eliminate waste.

When reuse isn't possible, recycling is the simplest way to divert plastic from landfills. But not all lab plastics can be recycled! Institutions have different regulations and recycling capabilities, so it’s important ask for guidance from your Environmental Health and Safety department and local recycling facilities. Even with that information, there are so many different grades of plastics in the lab, it can still be difficult to tell what can be recycled!
